This year's VMA nominations include some new "quarantine" categories
Acknowledging that the pop culture landscape has been a tad bit weird this year—on account of the Everything—MTV announced today that it’s adjusting the categories for its upcoming Video Music Awards to better reflect our current semi-reality. Specifically, the award show—scheduled for web broadcast on August 23—has added categories for Best Music Video From Home and Best Quarantine Performance this year, acknowledging great strides forward in the fine arts of Keeping Your Shit Together, Barely.
Nominees for the home video category include people with some pretty nice homes, admittedly; 5 Seconds Of Summer, Ariana Grande & Justin Bieber, Blink-182, Drake, John Legend, and Twenty One Pilots are all nominated for these DIY feats. Legend also scored a nomination for quarantine performance for his #togetherathome concert series; he’s joined in the category by Chloe X Halle, CNCO, DJ D-Nice, Lady Gaga, and Post Malone.
Of course, the VMAs aren’t just celebrating great strides in Tik-Tok adjacent performaning this year; the award show will also feature the usual assemblage of genre-based awards, plus Song, Video, and Artist Of The Year. Top nominees this year include Grande and Lady Gaga (9 nominations apiece), and Billie Eilish, who scored 6. You can see the full list of nominees below.
