To Tell The Truth, ABC’s celebrity game shows are a welcome summertime escape right about now

Here’s what’s happening in the world of television for Monday, August 28. All times are Eastern.

Top pick

To Tell The Truth (ABC, 10:01 p.m.): The dog days of summer are at their ruff-est, with much of the primetime lineup sloughing off early for the Labor Day holiday. So be extra grateful for ABC’s unabashedly kitschy slate of game-show throwbacks, which knows that winners never quit—though they do lie, in order to stump the celebrities of To Tell The Truth. Moreso than any of the other franchises ABC has revived in recent years, this Anthony Anderson-hosted take on the classic panel show comes with new bells and whistles. Anderson’s mother, Doris Day Bowman, serves as her son’s wisecracking sidekick and scorekeeper, and the celebrity who fell for the most impostors must tweet an embarrassing lie of Anderson’s choosing. But the essence of the game’s jovial fact-finding mission remains intact, as does the giddy kick of watching famous people trying to figure out who’s trying to pull the wool over their eyes. Now if only they’d bring back that vintage theme song. Gratuitous lyrics or no, it’s an earworm—and that’s no lie.

Regular coverage

Preacher (AMC, 9 p.m.)

Wild card

Siesta Key (MTV, 10:01 p.m.): MTV’s attempt to re-bottle the lightning of Laguna Beach continues apace. But you know what lightning you can’t bottle twice? The vacant stare and inexplicable magnetism of future One Tree Hill player Stephen Colletti. The name still echoes in our minds, running through the nasal passages of Kristin Cavallari: “Steee-vennn.”
