Sexual assault charge against Michael Smith, Trailer Park Boys' Bubbles, dismissed

Michael Smith, best known as Bubbles on Trailer Park Boys, is returning to work on the Canadian cult comedy after a Nova Scotia judge dismissed the sexual assault charge against him. The judge made her decision ahead of the three-day trial in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, which was set to begin today, because the complainant withdrew from testifying. According to the CBC, in a statement, the complainant explained she was “unwilling to sacrifice my mental health” by recounting the incident publicly, and the sexual assault case against Smith “hinge[d] almost exclusively” on her testimony. Smith was charged with sexual assault in October 2025 for an alleged incident on December 30, 2017. He pleaded not guilty earlier this year.

“The court has dismissed the charge against Michael Smith, concluding the legal proceedings that began in October 2025 regarding an allegation dating to December 2017,” a statement from Trailer Park Boys Incorporated reads. “Now that he is cleared of this matter, Mike is resuming his responsibilities with Trailer Park Boys Incorporated. The company will provide no further comment regarding the concluded proceedings.”

The complainant’s statement reiterates many of the struggles victims face when seeking justice for sex-related crimes. “I am intimidated by a system, despite it being 2026, where defence attorneys still use tactics that blame victims for surviving and reporting sexual assaults,” the statement reads. “I know what happened that night in 2017. My stepping away from the case does not change the facts of that incident. Rather, it is a gesture of reclaiming my agency after investigating options within a system that strips me of my voice.” Without her testimony, prosecutors didn’t have much of a chance of securing a conviction.

A managing director for the Trailer Park Boys operation, Smith had stepped away from his duties as the legal proceedings played out. His lawyer, Stan MacDonald, spoke outside the courthouse, saying the actor is “pleased that this matter is now behind him and he’s ready to move forward.” Smith has played Bubbles on Trailer Park Boys since 2001 and has since appeared in every episode of the mainline show and its many films and spin-offs.
