Demascus, a show about “experimental reality-bending technology,” just had its own reality bent for the second time. Never heard of it? That’s probably because AMC Networks canceled the series back in 2023, before it ever made it to air. Now, Tubi is rescuing the orphaned show, Deadline reports. It’ll premiere August 7 as a Tubi Original.

AMC originally axed the series, created by playwright Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm through the network’s “scripts-to-series” program, as part of a cost-cutting measure. (Hmm… where have we heard that one before?) Its writers room had opened in 2021 before the show officially received a series order in 2022. Production was complete by the time it was canceled in 2023.

“Welcome to the business. This sucks. But it’s happening EVERYWHERE,” showrunner Kirk A. Moore Moore wrote on Twitter (back when it was still called Twitter!) at the time. “It’s wild that no one gets to see all the very good work everyone has put into this project because of finances and issues beyond our control.”

Now, they finally will. Demascus stars Okieriete Onaodowan (Station 19 as well as Hamilton‘s original Hercules Mulligan/James Madison) in the titular role. The series follows Demascus, a 33-year-old Black man, as he uses the reality-bending technology in question to embark on a “mission of self-discovery,” per Deadline. The show also promises to explore the “gulf between Black male perspectives.” Janet Hubert, Caleb Eberhardt, Shakira Ja’nai Paye, and Martin Lawrence also star.

“We’re excited to introduce audiences to Demascus—a bold, genre-bending blend of comedy and sci-fi that challenges conventions as much as it entertains,” Samuel Harowitz, an SVP at Tubi, said in a statement. “At Tubi, we champion stories that surprise, provoke, delight and resonate deeply with engaged fandoms, and Demascus is exactly the kind of original storytelling we’re proud to spotlight.”

The show is executive produced by Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul‘s Mark Johnson, who lauded Chisholm for answering the question “What does it take to be a good man?” with “some of the most surprising and nuanced revelations one could expect,” in his own statement. He continued, “We thank AMC Studios for sharing our belief in this seriocomic series and Tubi for its steadfast conviction that it belongs on the air.”
