The new Miami Vice movie can have a little Goggins, as a treat

Say what you like about Top Gun: Maverick director Joseph Kosinski’s efforts to get his Michael Mann on with his upcoming film Miami Vice ’85: The man can cast a damn movie. Having already set Leading Men Of The Day Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler as his cool-as-fuck Miami cops, Kosinski and his team have since spent the last few months adding the likes of Whitney Peak, Alden Ehrenreich, Camila Morrone, John Leguizamo, and Danny Ramirez to their cast; now, they’ve decided we can all also have a little Walton Goggins, too, to get us through those hot Miami nights.

This is per Deadline, which reports that the Fallout star has just joined the film, which Kosinski is currently putting together at Universal with a script from Dan Gilroy. Talking to “uncomfirmed sources,” the outlet says Goggins has actually been in the mix for a while now, but worries about his Fallout schedule stopped him from formally being cast; with those kinks now worked out, he’s supposedly now officially down to play a henchman to John Leguizamo’s drug kingpin. Which is great news, honestly, because, while he has a considerable amount of range, we’re pretty confident that Goggins can hench with the best of ’em.

Miami Vice ’85 is, admittedly, still a pretty long way off, though: The film—reportedly taking as its inspiration the pilot episode of the original Miami Vice TV series that aired in 1984—is currently aimed at a May 2028 release date, with production expected to begin later this year. Kosinski, who’s fresh off F1, has apparently doubled down on his addiction for big, high-def cameras in the meantime, with the intent to shoot the movie in IMAX in order to capture every inch of Goggins’ endlessly fascinating face. (Also probably a lot of speedboats, fast cars, and cool clothes, but we’d be lying if we weren’t most especially psyched at the idea of a 30-foot-tall Walton at this point.)
