Weekend Box Office
After four weeks spent in the looming, bat-shaped shadow of The Dark Knight, the top 10 finally saw a little shake-up this week, with Tropic Thunder taking the top spot with its solid $26 million take and finally knocking the juggernaut blockbuster down to No. 2. The Ben Stiller-helmed, star-laden comedy stumbled a bit during its mid-week opening, taking in only $6.5 million during its Wednesday debut, leading some to posit that it would fail to match the opening take of last week's big newcomer, Pineapple Express, which opened at nearly twice that the previous Wednesday. And while Thunder's five-day take did fail to match that of Express, it took in more over the Friday to Sunday period.
Pineapple Express, meanwhile, suffered the highest drop in the top 10, falling to No. 5 with $10 million, behind two new releases: Star Wars: The Clone Wars at No. 3 with $15.5 million, and Mirrors at No. 4 with $11.1 million. The week's other major new release, Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona, just cracked the top 10 with $3.7 million. The Mummy: Tomb Of The Dragon Emperor came in at No. 6, while Journey To The Center Of The Earth finally fell out of the top 10, thus ending that sad chapter in box-office history known as "Brendan Fraser has two movies in the top 10." Mamma Mia! continued to plug away, falling only one spot to No. 7 with $6.5 million in its fifth week; Sisterhood Of The Traveling Pants 2 at No. 8 ($5.9 million) and Step Brothers at No. 9 ($5 million) rounded out the top 10.
