Weekend Box Office
After an impressive bump in sales last week, the box office mellowed back down this weekend, with another four-pack of new releases failing to generate the same kind of heat last weekend's quartet of big openers did. The Samuel L. Jackson-starring cop thriller Lakeview Terrace landed at No. 1 with a solid $15.6 million take, but the weekend's three other new releases were more tepidly received. Mercifully, last week's top contender, Burn After Reading, took the No. 2 spot ahead of the Dane Cook ugh-fest My Best Friend's Girl ($8.3 million). Igor clinched the family demographic with $8 million, enough to land it at No. 4, while Ricky Gervais and his comedy Ghost Town had a modest showing at No. 8 with $5.2 million.
Last week's No. 2 film, Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys, marked the biggest drop percentage-wise in the top 10, falling to No. 6 with $7.5 million, behind Righteous Kill at No. 5 with $7.7 million. The Women fared little better, dropping three spots to No. 7 with $5.3 million. The Dark Knight marked its 10th week in the top 10 with $2.9 million, landing it at No. 9, ahead of The House Bunny ($2.8 million), which has somehow managed to remain in the top 10 for five weeks.
