Weekend Box Office
A quartet of new releases shook up the top 10 this weekend, led by the surprise hit Obsessed, which exceeded far beyond expectations to land at No. 1 with $28.5 million. Last week’s top earner, 17 Again, dropped 50 percent, but still managed to land at No. 2 with $11.67 million, just barely ahead of new release Fighting, which opened at No. 3 with $11.44 million. Despite the combined star power of Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx, Oscar-bait The Soloist clunked into No. 4 with $9.72 million. Disney’s Earth benefited from an unusually wide release for a nature documentary, opening at No. 5 with $8.55 million.
The rest of the holdovers from last week took a substantial dip overall, though Monsters Vs. Aliens held up the best, dropping only two spots to No. 6 with $8.52 million. State Of Play dropped from No. 2 to No. 7 in its second week with $6.89 million, ahead of Hannah Montana The Movie at No. 8 with 6.37 million. A pair of actioner sequels rounded out the top 10, with Fast And Furious at No. 9 with $6.06 million and Crank 2 nosediving 65 percent to No. 10 with just $2.4 million in its second week.
