Digger is in a major box office hole

Talk about an inauspicious end. The last film that Warner Bros. released before being totally absorbed into Paramount Skydance has earned a “meh” (at best) from most critics and has officially bombed at the box office. In its opening weekend, Digger earned just $8 million in the United States and another $20 million overseas. Deadline reports that the film, which had a budget of $160 million, is expected to lose about $150 million. It opened at fifth place at the domestic box office this weekend.

Verity, meanwhile, was quite a different story. The film, adapted from a Colleen Hoover novel and starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson, opened in first place, earning $32.6 million at the domestic box office and another $30 million abroad. The film had a budget of just $40 million and becomes the third Hathaway movie in 2026 to open at number one, after The Devil Wears Prada 2 and The Odyssey. Now, the actor is free to disappear, to take a break from promoting movies and to welcome her third child in peace, as she has been anticipating all summer long.

Elsewhere, Resident Evil held strong, maintaining the number two spot at the domestic box office for the second week in a row and crossing a $245 million gross globally. The rerelease of Avengers: Endgame fell from first place to seventh place, adding just $4.4 million. And, for the first time since July, The Odyssey does not appear in the top ten of the week. Take a look at the whole top ten below, courtesy of Box Office Mojo.

  1. 1. Verity
  2. 2. Resident Evil
  3. 3. Heart Of The Beast
