It's a bad weekend at the box office for The Social Reckoning

And it's an even worse weekend for Digger.

It's a bad weekend at the box office for The Social Reckoning

First, the bad news: The Social Reckoning, the follow-up to 2010’s box office and awards hit The Social Network, opened to just $5.5 million at the domestic box office, down from the still-modest $7 million expectation that its studio had, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film has managed to net $9 million when overseas box office tallies are included, but with a $30 million budget, it’s certainly not good news for the Aaron Sorkin-directed movie.

But there’s worse news, and it’s for Digger. After a very weak start at the box office last week, the Alejandro G. Iñárritu film could lose $245 million, according to Variety. Ticket sales fell 60% for the film’s second weekend, with a cumulative tally of just $14.4 million domestically and $35.3 million globally. Variety reports that the film is expected to end its theatrical run with just $50 million, while it needs $350 million to break even. (A Warner Bros. spokesperson denied this figure and said that Digger only needed $300 to break even, which still seems unlikely to happen.)

At least one new film is expected to break even, though. Other Mommy opened at number one at the box office, bringing in $27.5 million in the United States with a global total passing $45 million. It’s not expected to last especially long in theaters, given that it has the worst CinemaScore since Megalopolis and near-universally negative reviews from critics. Still, audiences have been showing up for horror movies, even if they’re ones they’ll probably never want to watch again.
