Zack Snyder says Rebel Moon needs to be a bit "more popular" to score a sequel

“Maybe” seems to be doing a lot of work here. Given Snyder’s recent pivot to independent filmmaking with The Last Photograph and Netflix’s apparent abandonment of his $100 million LAPD action movie despite its first-look deal with the director, it sure looks like the prospects of the streamer funneling even more cash into Rebel Moon sequels are rather dire. Truly, this is a bleak turn of events for hard-R sci-fi/schlock enthusiasts, for if a Rebel Moon director’s cut couldn’t put enough eyeballs on the streamer to justify a franchise expansion (as we must infer), then really, what’s the point of nudity and graphic violence in pop sci-fi? Perhaps this seeming dearth of Rebel Moons will be the kick in the pants Snyder needs to get that Fountainhead TV series rolling. All we can say is, maybe James Gunn should greenlight that Dark Knight Returns movie he wants to make instead?
