Zack Snyder to swap sci-fi for UFC in upcoming Brawler

Perhaps Zack Snyder’s days of big superhero and/or science fiction worldbuilding are behind him. The blockbuster director is developing a film for Netflix about the Los Angeles Police Department, and has now signed on to write and direct Brawler, a movie set in the world of UFC. He’ll co-write the movie with frequent collaborators Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad (300, Rebel Moon), in addition to partnering with UFC CEO Dana White and boxing mag The Ring owner Turki Alashikh (who also serves as chairman of the General Entertainment Authority of Saudi Arabia).

Per The Hollywood Reporter, “Brawler will portray a young fighter rising from the rough streets of Los Angeles to get a shot at a UFC championship but having to battle his inner demons as he fights for redemption.” In a statement, Snyder said, “Behind every great fighter is the story of how they got there. UFC is the world leader in combat sports, and I’m honored to be partnering with them to tell this incredible story.”

Snyderverse stans will surely be interested in seeing his signature slo-mo action scenes applied to the viciousness of the UFC Octagon, as noted by Alashikh in his own statement (via Variety): “I’ve been a fan of Zack’s work for years, his unique style — from his iconic action sequences to his sweeping visuals and intensely emotional storytelling — coupled with his humanized portrayal of deeply-flawed characters is singular. I couldn’t think of a better person to partner with to bring the UFC to the big screen. The Ring Magazine, with its 103-year legacy, will support to ensure the project’s success.”

“His Excellency Turki Alalshikh and Zack Snyder have a shared vision to create a film about UFC,” said White. “They are both very passionate about this project to show fans what it takes to become a UFC champion. It’s an incredibly ambitious project and I look forward to seeing it come to life.”
