A Ghost Story director David Lowery making a "fantasy epic" for A24

David Lowery is still early in his career, but the young director has already racked up an intriguingly diverse oeuvre. He’s dabbled in existential drama (A Ghost Story), romantic tragedy (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints), and animated children’s fare (Pete’s Dragon), and even offered up a proper send-off to Robert Redford with this year’s The Old Man & The Gun. Today, Deadline announced his next artistic pivot, which will find the director trading the gun for a sword with a retelling of Sir Gawain And The Green Knight.

Originally written in the 14th century, the Arthurian story follows the title’s former character as he accepts the challenge of beheading the latter one. Deadline describes his version as a “fantasy epic,” which marks a new avenue for indie studio A24, who is behind the adaptation. A24, who know good talent when they see it, previously released Lowery’s critically acclaimed A Ghost Story.
