When we started talking about M. Night Shyamalan’s new film The Happening around the office last week it was with a mixture of awe and dread. Some of us were excited about the prospect of Shyamalan releasing an unabashed horror film that followed some mysterious premise to its grimmest conclusion. Others were fed up with Shyamalan after the last few films.
The most heated exchanges prior to seeing the film were passed between film editor Scott Tobias, a Shyamalan defender, and managing editor Josh Modell, who hasn’t seen a Shyamalan he liked since The Sixth Sense. After an office outing to see the movie, we recorded their conversation.
