DC’s Mister Miracle animated series will be a heavier affair than previous animated appearances for Barda and Scott Free (Hutcherson). The adult-oriented series is created by showrunner Tom King (Lanterns), based on the 2017 DC maxi-series of the same name (co-created by Mitch Gerads and set in Jack Kirby’s Fourth World), which dwelled on themes of nihilism and trauma amid domestic life, with an ominous declaration (“Darkseid Is”) recurring throughout the escape artist’s daily life. Still, the comic also boasts the supportive, often feisty patter between Scott Free and his warrior wife, a contrast that exists in the TV series and that Davis describes as “beautiful.” “It’s very dark. Well, not dark, but it’s dealing with true pain and depression,” she told Collider. “It’s placed in this superhero world, but it’s about a couple and a suicide attempt and a marriage and loving somebody and holding the pain that they’re in. And then, there is this greater context that they’re in. But Tom has just written the most exquisite, painful, grounded show that happens to be about these two superheroes. It’s kind of crazy.”
When DC Studios’ co-CEO Peter Safran let slip earlier this month that Davis and Hutcherson were starring as Big Barda and Scott Free in DC’s upcoming Mister Miracle series, many pointed out that the difference in height between the actors—Hutcherson is 5′ 5″; Davis is around 5′ 11″—which suggests to some that the mandate of DC’s cross-media continuity co-CEO James Gunn laid out during his opening slate presentation in 2023 could one day be put into use with the Fourth World characters. Should that day ever arrive, Davis’ expressed comfort with her co-star would translate to live-action well. “I’m recording with Josh, always. I think it would be hard. It’s such a two-hander of this couple dealing with a traumatic event and trying to navigate the healing of that and their marriage continuing. It’s quite a dense thing. I can’t imagine doing it, just saying the lines out into a void. I got to record with Josh, and he was incredible.”
Mister Miracle, which reportedly runs at eight thirty-minute episodes and will feature Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner in some capacity, is expected to premiere in 2028.
