The Peabody-winning animated series about some really magic mushrooms returns in January.

Adult Swim announces more Common Side Effects

Adult Swim is still suffering from some Common Side Effects, and they’re excited to share them with you. Announced earlier today at New York Comic-Con, Common Side Effects returns to HBO Max next January. Created by Joe Bennett and Steve Hely, the series was executive produced by King Of The Hill creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, and the first season maintained that show’s dry sense of humor.

The new season returns almost two years after its first season premiered on Adult Swim. As trippy as it is insightful, the series follows Marshall (voiced by Dave King), an anti-corporate fungi researcher who discovers a magical mushroom species that can heal almost anything. He reconnects with a high school crush, Frances, a beleaguered assistant of a pharmaceutical CEO, whom she hopes to impress with the “Blue Angel.” But instead of handing the drug over, though, the two become embroiled in a massive conspiracy and the targets of gangsters, corporate ghouls, and the federal government.

“We remain committed to asking important questions, capturing life’s absurdity, telling surprising stories and, wahenever possible, advancing our long-term mission of healing humanity through mysterious mushrooms,” said creators Joe Bennett and Steve Hely. “So if you’re one of humanity’s ills, know this: your days are numbered.”

Aside from building a strong cult following, Common Side Effects is a critical darling, enjoying strong reviews, including from The A.V. Club, and winning several Annie Awards and a Peabody.

Common Side Effects returns to HBO Max on January 24, 2027, at 11 p.m.
