Per Variety, the show’s official logline reads, “In this reimagining of the beloved 1998 book from Louis Sachar, a teenage girl (Rudolph) is sent to a detention camp where the ruthless Warden (Kinnear) forces the campers to dig holes for a mysterious purpose.” That pretty much sums up the plot of the movie, too. Rather than Camp Green Lake, this detention camp is called Camp Yucca. Like her male counterpart, Hayley is also sent there after being wrongly accused of a crime, and she’s “tired of her family’s belief that fate is fixed.”
Rounding out the Holes cast is Flor Delis Alicea as Queenie, “a seemingly fearless leader whose hard edges cover up her vulnerability”; Anire Kim Amoda as Thumbelina, who is “bold and not scared of anything or anyone, not even The Warden”; Noah Cottrell as Kitch, a kitchen worker who has a “secret, deeper reason he’s intent on maintaining his job”; Iesha Daniels as Mars, who is “brainy, charismatic, no-nonsense, and a bit of a player among the queer female campers”; Sophie Dieterlen as Sticky, “an ever-daydreaming girly-girl with a kind heart and an abiding passion for clothes”; Alexandra Doke as Eyeball, “a mischievous, zany artist who sees the world in her own idiosyncratic way”; and Maeve Press as Shrimp, “the youngest and smallest of the campers” whose “unusual, blunt nature makes her an outcast amongst the girls.” (Sounds like “Shrimp” might be this adaptation’s version of “Zero.”)
Disney is throwing a lot of talent behind this thing, including Lost and Cloverfield‘s Drew Goddard as executive producer. Liz Phang (Yellowjackets) will serve as showrunner and EP, with Alina Mankin (Katy Keene) also serving as writer and EP. Agatha All Along‘s Jac Schaeffer will direct and executive produce the Holes pilot.
