Bringing the series ever closer to the day when it’s just Norman Reedus standing atop a pile of festering corpses, loading and reloading his crossbow while stealing squinty-eyed glances at the camera, AMC has renewed The Walking Dead for a fifth season. “We are very happy to make what has to be one of the most anti-climactic renewal announcements ever,” AMC’s Charlie Collier said in a statement, finally too bored by his show continually setting ratings highs and numbed to his own success to even bother coming up with some fun zombie wordplay. “Blah blah blah, passionate fans, viewership records, our cast and crew all make it etc.,” Collier added, basically. The fifth season will presumably debut next fall—with Scott Gimple still in charge as showrunner (for now)—with that recently announced companion series expected to join it in 2015. After which, Charlie Collier will probably announce renewals for both of them while draped listlessly across a chaise lounge, stubbing cigarettes out on his arm just to feel a little excitement again.
