Amy Adams joins Javier Bardem on Cape Fear

Amy Adams has set her next grisly crime drama. The Sharp Objects actor will star opposite Javier Bardem in Apple TV+’s upcoming Cape Fear series, per The Hollywood Reporter. She’ll also serve as an executive producer, along with Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese. The two famed directors previously collaborated on the 1991 version of Cape Fear (starring Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, and Jessica Lange), itself a remake of J. Lee Thompson’s 1962 film (starring Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum, and Polly Bergen). All three titles are based on John D. MacDonald 1957 novel, The Executioners.

As in previous iterations, the 10-episode series will follow a notorious killer, Max Cady (Bardem), on his quest for vengeance against two married attorneys, Anna and Tom Bowden, who he blames for his imprisonment. Adams will play Anna; Tom has not been cast as of this writing.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the times, THR reports that the series will also add a new present-day element that “examines America’s obsession with true crime.” Maybe the narrative will flip back and forth between modern civilian detectives and the historic crime they’re consumed by à la Dark Places, another novel (and future HBO series) from Sharp Objects author Gillian Flynn. That decision will ultimately come down to Nick Antosca (The Act, Brand New Cherry Flavor), who’s on board as both writer and showrunner for Cape Fear
