Gather around, Manifest fans (we know you’re out there), for we must once again observe August 28 as Manifest Day.
In keeping with the streamer’s yen for timing announcements about Jeff Rake’s show about the beleaguered passengers of Flight 828 to August 28, Netflix has chosen today to announce the series’ first spinoff, Arrivals: A New Manifest Mystery. The timing shows both consistency and nerdy enthusiasm, which is nice to see in any sci-fi show: “A date no fan of Flight 828 will overlook,” Netflix proclaims, “and a signal that the world of Manifest is about to get bigger.”
“The world of Manifest has more stories to tell,” said series creator Rake in the announcement, which names Margaret Easley and Laura Putney (Manifest, Life Sentence) as co-showrunners. “To now bring fans a brand-new mystery from that world is quite simply beyond my wildest dreams[…] Together we’ve set out to create something bold, surprising, deeply human, and full of the kind of big ideas that spark conversations long after the credits roll. We can’t wait for a whole new audience—and longtime Manifest fans—to discover Arrivals.”
Netflix has provided a new logline for the spinoff, which keeps plot details to a minimum:
“When a mysterious plane crash-lands in Denver, the passengers emerge with no memory of who they are, where they came from, or why they’re here. A young social worker and a novice Homeland Security agent team up with the new arrivals in an attempt to stop a humanity-ending catastrophe, discovering along the way that they are all part of the very puzzle they’re trying to solve.”
This announcement marks the latest win for the underdog series and signals Netflix’s continued belief in the show, which the streamer picked up for a fourth and final 20-episode season after the series was canceled by its original network, NBC, in 2021. Manifest has, by Netflix’s reckoning, proven worthy of that belief, with the series racking up 130 million views and its fourth season spending nine weeks on the Global Top 10 English TV list, hitting #1 in over 90 tracked countries.
Since no new cast was attached to this announcement and Manifest wrapped up all its lingering plot threads in its final fourth season, we must assume Netflix’s line about “the world” of Manifest only getting “bigger” should be taken literally. Perhaps the streamer is chipping in for a bigger commercial airliner for the spinoff, bigger even than the series’ Boeing 737, which mysteriously disappeared for five years only to return without a single new wrinkle or gray hair on its hapless passengers. Like, say, the Airbus A380, which we understand is very big—and the bigger the planes, the more characters you can stash onboard. And the more characters sailing through time there are, the more Manifest stories that can be produced. This franchise practically flies itself!
