Beef creator Lee Sung Jin announces 2 new series in the works at Netflix

Beef creator, showrunner, executive producer, director, and writer Lee Sung Jin just launched a new production company, Lila Pictures (pronounced LEE-lah), to develop new scripted series and feature films for Netflix as part of his multi-year creative partnership with the streamer. Lee will create, executive produce, write, and direct, while Hyunji Ward will join as SVP of Film & Television. Along with the production company announcement, Netflix and Lee shared two new shows in development. The first is a limited drama series called The Only Child, produced by and starring Ali Wong as “the mother of a professional archer preparing to compete for her first gold medal,” per the press release. The second, a drama series titled Citizen’s Arrest, is created by Beef producer Gene Hong, “following two longtime friends and neighbors whose obsession with solving a local crime becomes an escape from the private crises neither is ready to face.”

“In Sanskrit, lila can be interpreted as ‘the divine play, and I’m grateful to reflect that through film and television, alongside close friends and collaborators like Ali Wong and Gene Hong,” Lee said. “This is just the beginning. There will also be merch.” Lee signed an overall deal with Netflix in 2023, following the success of Beef, which debuted as a limited series before shifting to an anthology. Season one starred Wong and Steven Yeun as two people involved in a road rage incident that spiraled into a full-blown feud. The first season won eight Emmys, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie (Yeun), and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie (Wong). The show was renewed for a second season, starring Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Charles Melton, and Cailee Spaeny as two beefing couples. The season earned 16 Emmy nominations and three below-the-line wins. There’s no word yet on a third season of Beef, but Lee has been busy juggling his Netflix projects with his co-writing duties for Marvel’s upcoming X-Men reboot.
