Toni Collette to star in new Apple TV series Lenni

At this point, it’s pretty well accepted that Toni Collette can do anything. And now the busy, Academy Award-nominated actor has signed on for Lenni, an Apple TV, English-language remake of the Norwegian comedy-drama series Pernille. Collette will star as Lenni, a divorced single mother and social worker who, “after a family tragedy, tries to protect her loved ones from the rough-and-tumble of life,” according to the synopsis.

And while Collette has proven more than comfortable playing roles from various places, Lenni will see the Aussie native get to use her real accent, as the show is supported by the New South Wales Government through Screen NSW’s Made in NSW Fund and is currently shooting in Sydney. Co-starring along with Collette are  Ciarán Hinds, Dan Wyllie, Josh McKenzie, Celeste Barber, Genevieve Hegney, Arka Das, and Wayne Blair. Collette has anchored various acclaimed series in the past, from playing a woman with multiple personalities in The United States Of Tara to a suitably terrifying sinister teacher in last year’s Wayward.

And while the Apple TV series’ description doesn’t sound like a laugh riot, the press release announcing the show goes on to say that Lenni “is a darkly comedic mystery about family—what it means to have one, to lose one, to pull one apart. Lenni, a child welfare worker and divorced mother of two, spends her days fighting for other people’s families while her own is in a constant state of hilarious chaos. The season follows Lenni through a new case, where the stakes couldn’t be higher as her work and personal life collides.” Plus, reviews have compared the original series to a Norwegian Better Things, which seems to give the talented Collette plenty of room to work.
