Peacock's first hit series, Bel-Air, wrapped its four-season run last November.

Peacock sends Bel-Air to New York in Hilary spin-off

Peacock is with her. Earlier today, Deadline announced Peacock is moving forward with the first spin-off in Fresh Prince history: Hilary, a Bel-Air story, is whistling for a cab and heading for New York. Starring Coco Jones, who played Will’s influencer cousin Hilary on the dramatic reboot of the ’90s sitcom, Hilary (like many, many spin-offs before it) will see the character move to a different city for a new set of adventures. In this case, Hilary receives a job offer from celebrity chef Yvonne Durand in New York and yells, “smell ya later,” to her castle on Los Angeles’ Westside. Ironically, Deadline notes, the spin-off picks up where the original Fresh Prince left off. On that show, Hilary (Karyn Parsons) leaves for New York in the series finale, where on Bel-Air she opens a cafe in Beverly Hills, which, given the state of L.A. restaurants, is probably not a wise investment. 

Series creator Tracy Oliver spent the 2020s on streaming networks, having created BET+’s First Wives Club series and Harlem for Prime Video. She is also the first Black woman to pen a film that grossed more than $100 million with 2017’s Girl Trip. Afterwards, she wrote the Regina Hall-Issa Rae body-swap comedy Little and the YA romance The Sun Is Also A Star, before beginning her extended stay on streaming, with a brief detour back to theaters with 2022’s The Blackening. She is supposedly still on the hook for a Girls Trip sequel, which has not yet happened somehow. In 2023, while promoting Harlem, she did say “it’s officially happening,” and they’re “looking to set it in Ghana.” That was before Tiffany Haddish starred in a reality series, Tiffany Haddish Goes Off, where she and her childhood friends take a girls’ trip to Africa. Still, it’s a big continent, and while Haddish’s crew hit South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Tanzania, they left Ghana on the table should Girls Trip 2 ever get booked.
