Billy Joel is “doing fine” after canceling all his scheduled tour dates to recover from a brain condition last month. The update comes from Howard Stern, who heard it directly from the “Vienna” singer at a “delightful” birthday dinner the two shared a few weeks ago.

“He does have issues, but he said, ‘Yeah, you can tell people I’m not dying.’ You know, he wants people to know that,” Stern shared on a recent installment of The Howard Stern Show. Joel recently shared that he had been diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) that has led to “problems with hearing, vision and balance,” per an Instagram statement. “Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period,” the statement continued. “He is grateful for the support from fans during this time and looks forward to the day when he can once again take the stage.”

While he may not be playing to packed stadiums right now, the artist is in good spirits and “lit up” over a conversation about Stern playing classical music on the guitar “because that’s what he’s into,” according to the radio host. “He’s just… got to deal with some medical stuff,” Stern added.

Joel previously postponed some tour dates in March after undergoing an undisclosed surgical procedure. “While I regret postponing any shows, my health must come first,” the artist wrote on his website at the time. “I look forward to getting back on stage and sharing the joy of live music with our amazing fans.”
