Blade Runner 2099 trailer offers new look at humanity's bleak teal-and-orange future

Released during New York Comic Con on Saturday, Prime Video’s new trailer for Blade Runner 2099 drops one hell of an enticing question: Wouldn’t the replicants (who have since asserted dominance over the planet in this sequel to Blade Runner 2049) be happier if they became what they were meant to be? Not mere facsimiles of humanity, but something beyond it? The mind boggles at what that could mean. Gargantuan, baby-faced amalgams of gray-matter nanobots? Matter-transcending beings of pure energy unfettered by the constraints of 3-D reality? A really smart cabbage? The possibilities triggered by our imaginations are endless. But since we’re talking about a movie spinoff show from Prime Video, where unbridled imagination must be tamped down somewhat for the sake of a global audience, 2099‘s new trailer instead gives us that bog-standard answer: Gods. It’s always “gods”! What does that mean?

Now, to be fair, leaving the meaning of things open to interpretation is the hallmark of the Blade Runner franchise. So, as the new series starring Oscar-winner Michelle Yeoh and Euphoria‘s Hunter Schafer nears its November 25 release date, this expanded trailer offers an appropriately vague look at its teal-and-orange-y future-shock storyarc. Yeoh is Olwen, a replicant Blade Runner (or is she? This is Blade Runner, after all), hunting down twenty-eight seemingly unconnected replicant fugitives currently running amok and/or fighting for their artificial lives—with a mysterious figure (Furiosa‘s Tom Burke) out there holding what appears to be a “cure” for replicants. (Whatever that means!) Joining Olwen is Cora (Schafer), an actual human cosplaying as a replicant for some damn reason we must assume the show will spend eight episodes dancing around. “I don’t know what you’re doing,” Olwen says to Cora as the trailer hits its thumping close. “Do you?” Come on, Michelle Yeoh, we’re not supposed to “get” Blade Runner—being inscrutable and ambiguous is part of its appeal!

Blade Runner 2099, from executive producer Ridley Scott and Silka Luisa (Shining Girls, Halo), hits Prime Video on November 25. You can watch the new trailer below.
