Bodies Bodies Bodies writer to help Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell go all Single White Female

Pulitzer finalist Sarah DeLappe has been tapped to pen Ortega and Russell's planned remake of the classic '90s roommate thriller.

Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell are reportedly one step closer to getting to Single White Female each other, as Deadline reports that the pair’s planned remake of the 1992 thriller has just secured a writer. Specifically, Sarah DeLappe, the Pulitzer Prize finalist playwright who picked up some film cred with her enjoyably chaotic script for 2022’s Bodies Bodies Bodies, has been attached to the project, which is being set up at the Sony-owned 3000 Pictures studio. The film has also had producers Stacey Sher (Django Unchained) and Marisa Paiva attached (in addition to Ortega and Russell), suggesting that the studio is getting serious about seeing these two leads go head-to-head with a little full-contact cohabitation.

Based on a 1990 novel by John Lutz, the original Single White Female was a pretty big hit for Sony back in the 1990s, helping launch the careers of star Bridget Fonda, as a young software designer with terrible tastes in roommates, and Jennifer Jason Leigh as the woman who quickly descends into a dog-murdering, identity-thieving obsession with her. Interestingly, although news of a remake starring Ortega and Russell has been kicking around since last year, there’s been no indication of which member of the stalker/stalkee dyad the two of them would be playing. (Maybe they’ll swap every other day, True West style.) 

Having dipped out on the most recent installment of the Scream franchise, Wednesday star Ortega is expected to appear next in theaters in Taika Waititi’s Klara And The Sun. Russell, meanwhile, will next star in South Korean film Hope; she’s mostly been working in theaters and smaller-scale films in recent years, after having her breakout role in Luca Guadagnino’s cannibal romance Bones And All.
