Brie Larson just became Apple's latest addition to its hoard of future streaming stars
Operating on the principle that you don’t turn down the chance to work with a Best Actress Oscar winner and a bona fide superhero—especially if you’re Apple, of all people—the tech giant/entertainment wannabe has just locked down Brie Larson for a new series about the CIA. Specifically, Apple has just given a direct-to-series order to a TV adaptation of Amaryllis Fox’s memoir Undercover: Coming Of Age In The CIA, with Larson in the starring role.
This is just the latest instance of Apple—which has yet to have anything even remotely resembling a TV hit for its still mostly hypothetical streaming offerings, despite years of low-key trying—has tossed a project at an actor on a hot streak, hoping they’ll bring a bit of fire their way. Other talent recently recruited for the company’s long-in-the-works full-on streaming offering include Justin Lin, J.J. Abrams, Steve Carell, Kumail Nanjiani, Hailee Steinfeld, Damien Chazelle, Reese Witherspoon, and more—a sort of “throw a bunch of extremely talented people at the wall, see what sticks, then quietly apologize to their agents for that whole ‘throwing people’ thing” approach to content creation.
Larson’s having a big damn year; besides Captain Marvel—out in theaters this weekend—and Avengers: Endgame—she’s also set to star in a new Netflix project, I’m Thinking Of Ending Things, from Charlie Kaufman.
