Introducing Endless Mode: A New Games & Anime Site from Paste
BritBox, your one-stop shop for all things Agatha Christie, just announced more Agatha Christie. This time it’s detective duo Tommy & Tuppence, who “fall in love, fall out of it, and tumble back in, all while solving some thrilling, entertaining mysteries along the way.” The series is being adapted by Phoebe Eclair-Powell (The Road Trip, Harm) “in her first drama series commission for television,” per a BritBox press release.
The streamer is billing this as the “first contemporary English language television series adaptation” of Tommy & Tuppence, which is a roundabout way of saying it’s been adapted before. Richard Attenborough (star of Jurassic Park, director of A Chorus Line, brother of Sir David) starred in a radio series adaptation alongside his wife Sheila Sim back in 1953; James Warwick and Francesca Annis played the detectives in multiple adaptations in the ’80s; there were also a few French films, and most recently a 2015 series adaptation starring David Walliams and Jessica Raine. What differentiates this upcoming show is that it’s set in the present day, as opposed to a period piece. As executive producer Katie Draper puts it, “Phoebe’s wonderful scripts combine screwball comedy, playful romance and thrilling murder to bring an exhilarating modern-day twist to Christie’s iconic detective duo.”
“As an Agatha Christie superfan, this job is a dream come true,” Eclair-Powell said in her own statement. “I am eternally grateful to James Prichard and Agatha Christie Limited for having me on board. With the excellent teams at Lookout Point and BritBox, who are clear Christie fans too, it’s a perfect combination. Christie’s detective duo are witty, sharp and raring to solve lots and lots of murders whilst asking if they should really be more than just Partners in Crime…To bring Tommy and Tuppence into the twenty-first century is truly an honour.” The six-part series is set to begin production later this year.
