It’s been three years since Charlie Kaufman’s last cinematic examination of human alienation, the stop-motion Anomalisa, arrived in theaters. Outside some work on an upcoming YA adaptation, Chaos Walking, Kaufman’s been fairly quiet since then, but that might be about to change: Variety reports that Kaufman has just signed a new deal with Netflix to write and direct an adaptation of Iain Reid’s bestselling novel, I’m Thinking Of Ending Things.
As the title suggest, the book is a lot darker and headier than its initial trappings—a young woman on a road trip, going to visit her boyfriend’s parents—might suggest. That sounds like an apt fit for Kaufman, whose work never seems to move far from the comfortably damaged interiors of his various characters’ heads. The deal will represent his first time working with Netflix; meanwhile, he’ll be producing with Anthony Bregman, who previously worked with Kaufman on Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and Synecdoche, New York.
