Charlize Theron getting real into South Korean Webtoons via The Mafia Nanny TV show

The premise really is all there in the name: Created by artists and writers working under the names sh00, Violet Matter, and roousuu, the original series centers on a young woman trained at a prestigious academy to care for the children of the world’s elites—only to be pulled back into her family’s organized crime roots with her first assignment. (Also, the employer in question is a silver-haired, brooding hunk, because how else are you going to get Webtoon users to keep spending their Coins week-in and week-out?) The series, in other words, is exactly the sort of heavily serialized, trope-heavy thing that online hordes have been getting themselves addicted to in droves lately—see also the whole vertical drama trend—and Theron and Disney clearly want in on the action.

Indeed, Disney actually bought a small stake in Webtoon last year to help shepherd projects exactly like this one, apparently the first live-action English remake of a Webtoon project to go into development, onto its screens. (They’re all over the place in South Korea, meanwhile, with at least one of those shows, The Remarried Empress, headed to Hulu in November.) The show is being executive produced by Theron’s production company, with Max Gill tapped to write. No word yet on whether Theron will act in the project; she’s a little outside the demographic for The Mafia Nanny herself, but a brief perusal of the comic’s Webtoons page shows plenty of older badass Mary Poppins types she could comfortably inhabit.
