Romain Gavras' English-language debut drops on Netflix October 16.

Captain America becomes Furiosa’s hostage in this trailer for Sacrifice, the English-language debut of French director Romain Gavras (Athena). But we kid: The film stars Chris Evans as faded movie star Mike Tyler, whose penance tour after a viral meltdown takes him to a swanky island eco-gala hosted by billionaire Ben Bracken (Vincent Cassel, who also starred in Gavras’ 2010 drama Our Day Will Come) and his wife, Gloria (Salma Hayek Pinault). Mike’s path back to stardom’s good graces won’t come cheap, as his choice for cultural absolution has also been targeted by Anya Taylor-Joy’s Joan, a radical eco-warrior who’s convinced an imminent “extinction event” can only be stopped by fulfilling a prophecy. Mike soon discovers, along with his fellow hostages (Cassel and This Is Going To Hurt‘s Ambika Mod), that the prophecy involves ritual sacrifice to an active volcano. 

“What begins as a glamorous display of virtue and influence quickly spirals into a hostage crisis,” the logline reads, “forcing everyone involved to confront questions of belief, identity, and what they are willing to sacrifice.” As for “belief,” we see Joan and Mike compare theirs in this trailer—his, the power of stories to change the world; hers, the cleansing power of death, which is basically the same thing. After the film’s premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last September, Natalia Keogan, in a review for The A.V. Club, wrote, “Void of righteousness, indignation, or even straight-up nihilism, Sacrifice won’t cause even the most malleable of worldviews to waver.” In other words, Netflix’s ideal festival purchase.

Sacrifice, which also stars John Malkovich, Yung Lean, and Charli xcx, hits Netflix on October 16. You can watch the trailer below.
