Netflix gives the go-ahead for The Diplomat season five

Netflix has announced that Debora Cahn’s The Diplomat has been given the go-ahead for a fifth season. Per an official release on Thursday, the streamer confirmed the renewal of the tense, often funny, occasionally sexy thriller, pointing to impressive viewing figures and social engagement as evidence that audiences worldwide just can’t get enough of watching Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell play sparring spouses amid the series’ various international imbroglios. (Though keeping The West Wing‘s Bradley Whitford and Emmy-winning Allison Janney around certainly doesn’t hurt.) Netflix is keeping details of the new season under wraps.

This announcement comes two weeks after The Diplomat‘s fourth season premiered on the streamer. The new episodes follow ambassador Kate Wyler (Russell) and her vice president hubby, Hal (Sewell), as tensions between the U.S. and the U.K. spike following an assassination attempt on President Grace Penn (Janney) at Windsor Castle (of all places). This renewal is a rare moment of stability and continuity at an ever-shifting Netflix, which has recently undergone deep cuts across its global TV division, with its most recent shake-up resulting the departure of former chief content officer Bela Bajaria and the dismissal of original-series executive Carolina García. Former Disney executive Peter Rice took over Bajaria’s role in late October.
