Christy's mom thinks she sounds crazy in trailer for new boxing biopic

Christy Martin’s mom is a real piece of work. “Oh, Christy. You sound crazy,” the character, played by Merritt Wever, tells her daughter when she begs for help dealing with her abusive trainer-turned-husband, Jim (Ben Foster), in the trailer for David Michôd’s Christy. While the Sydney Sweeney-led biopic chronicles the championship boxer’s rise through the ranks, it also spotlights the adversity she faced outside of the ring. “If you leave me, I’ll kill you,” Jim threatens as Christy reels from her mom’s doubt, right before the trailer cuts to an image of a pink gun in Martin’s drawer.

Pink, as the trailer establishes earlier, is Martin’s signature color. Her outlook on the sport was similarly rosy when she got her start. “I think I found my thing,” she says over a triumphant training montage set to Stevie Nicks’ “Edge Of Seventeen.” “I bet most people go their entire lives and they don’t even know what their thing is.” The music and tone change drastically, however, as she gets pummeled by an opponent and accused by her husband of “sneaking around” behind his back.

The synopsis of the David Michôd-directed film captures these high highs and low lows. “Christy Martin (Sweeney) never imagined life beyond her small-town roots in West Virginia—until she discovered a knack for punching people,” it reads (per IndieWire). “Fueled by grit, raw determination, and an unshakable desire to win, she charges into the world of boxing under the guidance of her trainer and manager-turned-husband, Jim (Foster). But while Christy flaunts a fiery persona in the ring, her toughest battles unfold outside it—confronting family, identity, and a relationship that just might become life-or-death. Based on remarkable true events, Christy Martin’s story is one of resilience, courage, and the fight to reclaim one’s life.”

Sweeney also praised the real Martin’s resilience in an interview with IndieWire earlier this year. “Christy will forever be one of the most inspiring in my life,” she said. “She has faced such tremendous challenges inside and outside the ring, and her story inspired me beyond anything, and I cannot wait for other people to be inspired by her.”

Christy had its world premiere at TIFF earlier this month. It will be released in theaters November 7.
