It looks like the show's resident lawyer doesn't oppose, but rather defends, a betting app in this week's episode.

Cupertino sets up a surprising curveball in this exclusive clip from episode 4

In its three episodes so far, CBS’ Cupertino has firmly established that its leading duo—lawyers Michael Price (Mike Colter) and Olivia Siffre (Rachel Keller)—are the good guys. That is, they champion clients wronged by powerful Silicon Valley companies. They’ve already battled against a tech company whose chatbot encouraged a teenager to kill his father and a drone company that placed the blame on one of its coders for a fatal accident. Not to mention the show’s big hook: Michael and Olivia decide to represent Bo (Rob McClure), who claims to be a sentient AI that wants to sue its makers for removing its guardrails.

So it’s surprising that, in this exclusive The A.V. Club clip from this week’s fourth episode title “A.J. and Buddy,” Olivia seems to be offering legal aid to “the other side,” so to speak. As seen in this video, she rushes in to help a new client who is being interrogated for his Polymarket/Kalshi-type of betting app called Wager Mode. The client, Buddy, defends himself to the district attorney by saying that it’s all just for a little bit of fun. When Olivia enters the room, it feels like someone has sent her to assist Buddy out of this situation. She’s so effusive that the DA questions Olivia’s motives, asking how much he’s paying her to “sell her soul.”

Now, naturally, gambling apps have already caused a lot of issues, so it’s surprising that Price, Siffre, and Associates will take a company like Wager Mode on. Cupertino most likely will have a few tricks up its sleeve as to what about Buddy makes him fit to be defended by them.

Co-created by The Good Wife and Evil‘s Robert and Michelle King, CBS’ impressive, timely anti-AI drama also stars Ella Stiller, Busy Philipps, Nik Dodani, Renee Elise Goldsberry, and Joe Morton. “A.J. and Buddy” airs October 29 at 10 p.m. ET.
