Scarlett Johansson says her role in The Batman: Part II gave her “existential angst”

As production on Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II continues to agitate worried fans—despite Steven Soderbergh politely coming in with back rubs and free Game Boys for everybody—Scarlett Johansson is expressing “existential angst” about her mystery role in the DC Studios sequel. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight during a press junket to promote her role in James Gray’s very good new film Paper Tiger, Johansson briefly discussed the challenges of her role as her Tiger co-star Adam Driver, who’s certainly no stranger to top-secret movie projects, especially with Steven Soderbergh, watched her grapple with these feelings while keeping mum about details.

“It was very hard to figure out,” Johansson said. “I don’t know why, whether it was just the role or it was just where I am in my life, but it was just hard to crack it. And that’s all I can say about it. It was a tough role in a lot of ways.” Who the Black Widow actor is playing in Reeves’ film is anyone’s guess, though some believe she’s playing Gilda Dent, the wife of district attorney Harvey Dent/Two-Face in the comics. Her co-star, Sebastian Stan, once told French newspaper Le Journal du Dimanche that he was playing Dent in the sequel, though the paper later removed the quote for unknown reasons. Spoiler hounds have been on high alert after production photos for Heidi Klum’s latest Halloween costume accidentally (or on purpose?) showed masks and makeup molds for certain Bat-characters, which have since cast doubt on rumors about the film’s story and the roles assigned to its cast (including Stan and Brian Tyree Henry).

People who write news updates about film and television share the angst Johansson’s role elicits, as we often personally muse to ourselves why major roles in each successive superhero movie must be kept secret, instead of everyone going, “Oh, they’re playing [insert interesting character here]. How about that?” and then promptly moving on with their day. Anyway, you can watch Scarlett Johansson tiptoe around her angst in the video below.
