Constantine is both a welcome and a curious development for the nascent DC Studios, which is still searching for its next breakout project after James Gunn’s Superman in 2025. At first blush, a dip into the Vertigo well seems like a smart pivot from DC’s deep superhero bench, though it’s worth noting that John Constantine has since shared elbow room at the local pub with DC heroes in books such as Justice League Dark, after debuting in The Saga of the Swamp Thing #37 in 1985 and hosting his own solo horror series, Hellblazer, for over 300 issues. After debuting on NBC’s one-season wonder Constantine, the character (played by Matt Ryan) also appeared on the CW superhero jamboree series DC’s Legends Of Tomorrow. Still, given Galluppi’s resume, DC seems to want something rougher around the edges than we’ve seen before, including Francis Lawrence’s 2005 Constantine, starring Keanu Reeves, which reinvented the character co-created by Alan Moore, Steve Bissette, and John Totleben as an American exorcist roaming seedy Los Angeles.
Galluppi’s next project, Evil Dead Wrath, isn’t set for release until April 7, 2028, though Evil Dead legend and Spider-Man director Sam Raimi has publicly thrown his full endorsement of the up-and-comer after his feature debut in 2024, The Last Stop In Yuma County. “[Galluppi] is a director that shows uncommon control,” Raimi said in an official Wrath announcement in 2026.
The future of Reeves’ Constantine 2 remains up in the air. Warner Bros. first announced Reeves would return with Lawrence as director in 2022, and the project seemingly survived the advent of Gunn and co-CEO Peter Safran’s DC Studios later that year. Reeves has even publicly discussed talks with the DC braintrust about the film as late as February 2025. “We’ve been trying to make this film for over a decade,” Reeves said back then. “We just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios, and they said, ‘Okay.’ So, we’re going to try and write a script.” However, co-star Peter Stormare told The Direct in May of that year that the actor seemed unhappy with how the script was developing.
