Daredevil: Born Again is supposed to end with season three, says Marvel TV head

Marvel Television honcho Brad Winderbaum threw water on signs of production discord in a recent interview.

Daredevil: Born Again is supposed to end with season three, says Marvel TV head

Accepting that a well-liked thing is coming to an end is difficult, and being among those ending it is probably even harder—though the pay is probably better. Take Brad Winderbaum, head of Marvel Television, Animation, Comics & Franchise, who recently appeared on The Brandon Davis Show to discuss the status of Marvel TV following the premiere of VisionQuest, only to be hit with questions about Daredevil: Born Again, which we now know will end with its upcoming third season. Remaining upbeat about his cool (and likely stressful) job, Winderbaum suggested that the Daredevil news was what it was, exhaling with mild frustration, “You never want the behind-the-scenes story to ever be told, especially in this day and age. Sometimes, it just drives the news. The season three story… it just kind of hit the audience—the information got out when it did. And, y’know, we’re just trying to make the thing!”

Winderbaum is referring to an article from The Hollywood Reporter stating that Born Again showrunner Dario Scardapane had “quietly parted ways” with Marvel during the post-production of season three—a surprising development that’s at least in keeping with Born Again tradition, in that showrunners usually have short tenures in Hell’s Kitchen. (Scardapane replaced Born Again‘s Matt Corman and Chris Ord in 2023.) Winderbaum’s answers to Davis’ Daredevil questions seem to suggest that Marvel’s trying to spritz water on any signs of internal disharmony as the division gains steam with its top-secret TV project, Zodiac. Part of this effort entails selling the idea that Born Again was always meant to end with season three, even though Winderbaum himself once said the show was meant to run up to “infinity” seasons. “That’s the plan,” he told Screen Rant in 2025. “Season 2 will come out next year, and then hopefully Season 3 and Season Infinity after that. I think this world is extremely rich, and there are many stories to be told on the streets of New York.”

That plan has clearly changed, though Winderbaum sure was stressing the word “always” during his talk with Davis. “The plan was always to culminate at three,” he said this week. “Because the way we’re looking at it, the original series is three seasons; Born Again is three seasons. They’re kind of like trade paperbacks or collections that you can slot into your shelves—like these are two three-volume sets, and then we will take a breath and figure out what’s next for the character.” As most trade collections infrequently share the same number of issues, we suggest you not take Winderbaum’s metaphor at face value, but rather accept it as a nice, clean, and very corporate explanation for why Marvel is putting Born Again to bed. Do not, for instance, compare his Born Again/Netflix volume example with the trade collections for, say, Daredevil: Born Again and Daredevil: The Man Without Fear, since the former collected eight issues while the latter collected a paltry five; otherwise, what Winderbaum just said wouldn’t make much sense.

Winderbaum continued to spritz water on Scardapane and Marvel’s rift by saying nice things about his work on season three. “I think Dario hit the story from some very interesting angles,” he said before affirming that season three would tackle, at least in part, the “Devil In Cell Block D” storyline by Ed Brubaker and Michael Lark. *thinks* Maybe Winderbaum’s “volume sets” metaphor is his way of hinting at a possible 4K box set launch for both Daredevil and its revival series! We mean, probably not, but what if? At any rate, if you’re still keen on watching series stars Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio slam their meaty fists into each other’s faces from now until infinity, there’s still time to do as Charlie says and join the “Save Daredevil” campaign.
