Despite this fake teaser poster, a Spaceballs sequel probably isn’t happening

A very creative, albeit kind of cruel, person has apparently taken it upon themselves to get the world’s hopes up for a prospective sequel to Mel Brooks’ 1987 space opera spoof Spaceballs. Jedi News tweeted a photo of posters for the ostensible Spaceballs: The Search For More Money tantalizingly displayed somewhere in the New York City subway system.

If you’re a fan of Brooks’ very silly and much beloved parody of Star Wars, Star Trek and most other science fiction touchstones, then you probably recognize that title from this exchange from the end of the movie:

Lone Starr (Bill Pullman): I wonder, will we ever see each other again?

Yogurt (Brooks): Who knows? God willing, we’ll all meet again in Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money.

While Brooks probably isn’t directly responsible for the existence of these posters—there’s been no mention of a Spaceballs sequel in any of the trade publications—he probably provided some inspiration for their creation. Last year on Adam Corolla’s Take A Knee podcast, the 89-year-old comedy legend mused about the feasibility of a sequel coinciding with the release of The Force Awakens and the resurrection of the Star Wars franchise:

“If I did a movie that came out right after Star Wars comes out—maybe a couple of months later—I’d have a big weekend, you know? No matter what, even if it fell on its ass and didn’t get its money back…but that first weekend, the anticipation of seeing Spaceballs 2, would… I still have Daphne Zuniga and I still have Rick Moranis if he’d do it, and I’ve still got me.”

Brooks makes a convincing argument. Now if he could only convince himself to make it real.
