Disney catches global Pokémon rights, greenlights new stop-motion series

The big news, though, is that part of the deal means Disney has issued its own greenlight (and a fresh new teaser trailer) to Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures Of Sirfetch’d & Pichu, the stop-motion animation show from the creators of Wallace & Gromit. Announced last year, the series has a pretty silly plotline—one that kind of sounds like Don Quixote for third-graders—as the titular pocket monsters roam the Galar Region, trying to help their fellow ‘mons. But we can’t imagine we’ll care all that much about the narratives, when the chance to see The Pokémon Company’s legendary stable of creatures moving around in stop-motion like this is on the table. (Looking through the trailer, we’re especially charmed by all the effects work going on around various Pokémon’s moves; there’s something especially pleasantly silly about seeing Aardman animate Appletun’s signature and goopy blast of Apple Acid.)

The Misadventures Of Sirfetch’d & Pichu is currently aiming at a 2027 release.
