Doechii is just somebody that she used to know in "Anxiety" video

The new video pays homage to the original "Somebody That I Used To Know" video and Doechii's 2019 self, who originally recorded the song.

You can always count on Doechii for an elaborate, expertly choreographed music video, and “Anxiety” absolutely delivers. It’s also pretty freaky—exactly as the viral hit’s title demands. While it only hit streaming services in March, “Anxiety” has already had a long, weird life. The Grammy-winning rapper initially recorded the song, built off Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used To Know,” in her bedroom in 2019, but it was rediscovered on TikTok this year and quickly became almost as inescapable as that original Gotye single. The track gave rise to a viral, Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air-inspired dance trend (posted by everyone from the White Lotus cast to Will Smith and Doechii themselves) and eventually inspired Doechii to re-record it for Spotify, Apple Music, and the like.

Now, she’s paying homage to the past version of herself that originally recorded the song. The new video opens with current-day Doechii in a set resembling her original bedroom, before she realizes she’s trapped in not only an elaborate, labyrinthine house, but also an unending, Kaufman-esque time loop. Her real-life twin sisters also appear in  dresses shouting out The Shining, while two actors hover on the sidelines in the instantly recognizable body paint from Gotye’s 2011 video

There must be some real magic in that beat, because it gave Doechii her first top 10 single on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The rapper was “shocked” by the song’s resurgence, as she told Entertainment Tonight in an interview last month. “That song is years and years old that I made in my bedroom just goofing around, and now it’s something that’s huge that people connect with, which is powerful,” she said.
