In what basically amounts to a Sophie’s Choice for fans of the director (except for the not-insignificant faction that thinks he ought to drown both of them in the bath), Ridley Scott has said that after he finishes directing Matt Damon in The Martian, he must choose between directing Blade Runner 2 and Prometheus 2.
Blade Runner 2 is apparently farther along than we all thought. Last we checked in with the narratively implausible sequel, it was publicly begging Harrison Ford to come back in the public relations equivalent of Lloyd Dobler holding aloft that famous boombox. But apparently the grand romantic gesture worked, because in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Scott referenced Ford’s involvement with Blade Runner 2, which he says also has a completed screenplay.
“It’s written and it’s damn good,” Scott says. “Of course it involves Harrison, who is a survivor after all these years—despite the accident,” presumably rolling his eyes and making a dismissive gesture with his left hand. “So yes, that will happen.”
The big question for all of this is “when,” a dilemma of which Scott is very aware. “That’s the problem,” he tells EW. “I’ve got a lot of ducks in a row. But they’re all written.” But as far as priorities go, Scott says he’ll “probably” put Blade Runner 2 in front of Prometheus 2. That makes sense, because no one’s started a Reddit thread about how much they hate Blade Runner. (The director’s cut, anyway.)
