Netflix identifies Donald Glover to write, direct, and star in PUBG series

While Fortnite‘s legion of battle royale gamers await their moment in the TV adaptation sun, Netflix is moving forward with plans to bring PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds, a.k.a. PUBG, a.k.a. PUBG: Battlegrounds, to the small screen. Per The Wrap, the streamer has hired Donald Glover to write, direct, and star in the project, which he’ll develop with his brother and frequent collaborator, Stephen. The Glovers previously worked together on Atlanta, Swarm, and Mr. And Mrs. Smith, and Netflix clearly hopes the siblings can bring their off-beat sensibility to a video game with no story.

Like Fortnite, PUBG is primarily a multiplayer battle royale game in which players, alone or on a team of four, skirmish with up to 100 other players in last-man-standing deathmatches. PUBG was one of the more influential games in the battle royale genre and the game of 2017. It became so successful so quickly that, after its success, Epic rejiggered its soon-to-be generation-defining version, Fortnite, to focus more closely on battle royales and released Fortnite Battle Royale as a standalone game to compete with PUBG. Fortnite would eventually overtake PUBG as the genre’s gold standard—thanks in large part to all the dance moves the game introduced to nine-year-olds.

The news arrives on the heels of Netflix killing a deal to adapt a bunch of Xbox games because it fired all the executives working on said deal.
