DreamWorks acquires Monsterpocalypse for possible Tim Burton film

Having recently begun developing Robopocalypse, DreamWorks is apparently seeking to shore up its credentials as the premier source of end-of-the-world entertainment with Monsterpocalypse, based on the popular board game where various kaiju monsters do battle while wreaking havoc on various cityscapes. The studio has acquired the film rights and is said to be courting Tim Burton to help them develop it.

Given Burton’s professed love for Godzilla—and lately, ideas that he doesn’t have to come up with himself—having him take on the story of various Godzilla-like dinosaurs duking it out with flying saucers, giant robots, cyborg ninjas, and Lovecraftian spirits of the underworld could be fun, although the timing certainly could be better: Legendary Pictures has already announced that it plans to bring back Godzilla himself in 2012. And in the meantime, everyone who cares about Burton’s work at all most likely wants him to stop futzing around and get to Dark Shadows already. As of now, of course, Burton’s most immediate project remains a full-length adaptation of his 1984 short Frankenweenie.

By the way, we're not sure why anyone needs a big fancy movie version of Monsterpocalypse when there are already perfectly good videos like this one:
