Dune and Dune: Part Two to sandworm their way back into theaters

Mark your calendars: November 13 is the real Dunesday.

Dune and Dune: Part Two to sandworm their way back into theaters

Big news for people who love nothing better than numbing their tushes in movie theater seats: Denis Villeneuve’s Dune and Dune: Part Two are sandworming their way back into theaters ahead of Dune: Part Three, the final Dune film from Warner Bros. (At least until someone at WB’s parent company Skydance figures out Frank Herbert’s son Brian and author Kevin J. Anderson have been co-writing Dune books virtually nonstop since 1999, but let’s just keep that between us for now.) Per Variety, the Oscar-nominated 2021 and 2024 films will hit IMAX screens for a double-Dune feature on November 13, with both films getting additional but separate showings from November 14 to 18. The films will feature an exclusive sneak peek at Dune: Part Three, which Dune-thusiasts will doubtlessly enjoy until they realize they can’t watch Dune: Part Three until December 18.

Just for funsies (it’s Friday!), let’s add up the runtimes for Dune and Dune: Part Two so those of you participating in the double-feature can properly prepare your tushes for the smooshing they will surely endure on November 13. With Dune clocking in at 155 minutes and Dune: Part Two running at a soggier 165 minutes, you can expect to sit through 320 minutes, or under a quarter of an entire Earth day, of Arrakis action—with intermission, thank Shai-Hulud. Such behavior isn’t uncommon among sci-fi/fantasy die-hards. In January, Fathom released the Extended Editions of Peter Jackson’s The Lord Of The Rings trilogy in theaters to celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Fellowship Of The Ring’s theatrical release, a 726-minute affair that this writer heard from their partner went by “like that” (with said partner snapping their fingers to express the swiftness of the experience). Naturally, such an endeavor requires sustenance, though AMC has denied Dune-heads going to this rerelease the pleasures of its new two-holed Sandworm popcorn bucket, which can’t be purchased until December.
