Dust settles at SNL with new cast member and a “genuinely happy” Cecily Strong

What has already been a big Saturday Night Live news week has just gotten a little bigger thanks to the addition of 6’3” college dropout Pete Davidson to the show’s cast. The 20-year-old Davidson, who made his network debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live in April, has been making waves on the standup scene with featured appearances on Adam Levine’s House Party and MTV’s Guy Code. Davidson will be the only new featured player on SNL’s upcoming 40th season. (New Weekend Update co-host Michael Che has been working as a writer for SNL since 2013—and besides, Weekend Update is different.)

Speaking of Weekend Update, recently deposed co-anchor Cecily Strong has been taking her change in circumstances like a champ. After news of Strong’s replacement broke on Thursday, she posted this gracious message on Instagram:

“I don’t see this as me leaving update, just as me being on update in a looser, goofier way that is a lot more fun for me and in a way I think I’m better at. And now I get to do features with the very funny and wonderful Michael Che! No point in being angry or sad for me for something I’m genuinely happy about! Unless you are just a person who enjoys being angry or sad. Then I guess play on, playa. Also, I danced too hard last night so now I am wearing a hot pad on my neck. Be angry and sad for me about my dumbass neck.”

It’s not like she’s going anywhere—she’ll still be a featured player on SNL, along with returning castmates Beck Bennett, Kyle Mooney and Sasheer Zamata—but still. That’s a classy lady right there.
