For we happy few who believe that Judd Apatow’s Funny People will one day be regarded as one of 2009’s best movies, the road to revisionism begins today, with the release of the stunning special edition Funny People DVD and Blu-ray. Packed with outtakes, bonus stand-up footage, fake (and real) documentaries, and archival footage of Apatow and star Adam Sandler, the Funny People discs generously expand on an already generous movie—one that thoughtfully, hilariously considers the necessary narcissism of successful comedians.
Also worth digging out of this week’s pile: Matteo Garrone’s Italian neo-neo-realist mob picture Gomorrah, and Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s drama Three Monkeys, about a family that refuses to confront their problems. And though nothing will ever top the finale of the American Life On Mars for sheer WTF-itude, it’s still worth watching a Life On Mars finale done right, via the second series collection of the British original.
