Exclusive Marvel preview: She-Hulk #12 ends a brilliant superhero run

The A.V. Club has written quite a bit about She-Hulk, and for good reason. In the last year, it skyrocketed to the top of Marvel’s titles, a superhero comic that shone so bright that it was only a matter of time before the light was put out. And that time comes next week with She-Hulk #12, the series’ final issue. There’s not much more to be said about this title that hasn’t been said already; Charles Soule’s writing, Javier Pulido and Muntsa Vicente’s art, and Kevin Wada’s covers are consistently excellent, and the book has used the heroine’s law background to offer a fascinating perspective on the Marvel Universe.

While this preview of next week’s issue doesn’t feature any of the She-Hulk’s intricate legal plotting, it does showcase the classic superhero fun that has made it such a delight every month. What other comic is ever going to have a team-up between She-Hulk, Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau), Tigra, Wyatt Wingfoot, Dr. Druid, Shocker, Vibro, and Nightwatch? There are some deep cuts in that group. This creative team has clearly had a great time rummaging through Marvel history over the course of their run.

With Secret Wars promising major changes for the Marvel Universe in the coming year, there’s still hope for Jennifer Walters to stay in the spotlight. She’s featured front and center on the cover for the first issue of Marvel’s upcoming all-female Avengers title A-Force, and there’s always a chance that her solo title will return. A new, post-Secret Wars She-Hulk title could be a great way to explore the altered Marvel landscape from an unconventional angle, and this creative team has already shown a talent for creating accessible, captivating superhero stories that don’t shy away from the complexity of continuity, but also don’t get weighed down by it.
