Scarlett Johansson walks down the spooky stairs in The Exorcist: Martyrs trailer

Mike Flanagan's 2027 Exorcist movie looks to be one part serial killer move, one part gorefest, one part good ol' religious nightmare.

Scarlett Johansson walks down the spooky stairs in The Exorcist: Martyrs trailer

The staircase that looms at the start of the trailer for next March’s The Exorcist: Martyrs isn’t the staircase from the original Exorcist, the real-world Georgetown walkway that Jason Miller so memorably tumbled down at the end of the 1973 film. But it’s not like writer and director Mike Flanagan doesn’t know what he’s doing by opening his trailer with that shot, either; his new film might be a lot gorier and more explicit than William Friedkin’s, but it’s also clearly aiming for that same element of dread, now with Scarlett Johansson as the mom watching her kid succumb to apparently unstoppable demonic influences.

If we’re being honest, though, the two-and-a-half-minute teaser actually puts us in mind of a whole other possession flick: Denzel Washington’s 1998 cult hit Fallen, which also centers on a cop who witnesses the execution of a serial killer (here played, albeit briefly, by John Leguizamo) who soon sees a demonic infestation try to follow them home. (Not that the Exorcist franchise itself hasn’t worked in some police procedural elements from time to time, most notably with The Exorcist III, based off William Peter Blatty’s novel Legion—whose Biblical namesake gets namechecked here by nervous priest Chiwetel Ejiofor.)

The Martyrs trailers gives us a quick runthrough of most of the rest of the film’s cast, too, including Sasha Calle as Johansson’s fellow murder cop, and Laurence Fishburne in a couple of brief glimpses of the old priest to Ejiofor’s young one. It also shows off a pretty hefty number of corpses and people mimicking executioner’s garb, which successfully hits the modern-day creep factor; we know Exorcist fans have been promised a lot of “We’re taking it back to basics, we swear!” revivals over the years, but at the very least, Flanagan seems to have nailed the feeling of pervasive and inescapable dread that was so key to the original movie’s nightmarish success.

The Exorcist: Martyrs debuts in theaters on March 12, 2027.
