Flaming Lips to let fans decide set at Pitchfork Music Festival

Although the band initially declined to play by the rules of the Pitchfork Music Festival's "Write The Night" performances—which allow fans choose the set list via online voting—festival organizers announced today that the Lips have apparently had a change of heart. Lips leader Wayne Coyne said the group will "do their best to accommodate the wildest and most obscure of request[s]—covers included."

The Lips close out this year's festival on July 19. To participate, ticket buyers go online and vote for the songs they'd like to hear, and the band will play "selected songs" from that batch. So it doesn't sound like the tyranny of the majority will rule here, like it will for Write The Night's other performers, Built To Spill, The Jesus Lizard, Yo La Tengo, and Tortoise, all of whom play Friday, July 17.

Three-day tickets for the festival have sold out, but individual and two-day and individual passes are still available here.
