Director of The Father and The Son abandons holy trilogy for Bunker trailer

Abandoning his holy trilogy that began with The Father and continued with The Son, Florian Zeller will now trap  Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz in a Bunker. Zeller’s latest, simply titled Bunker (no “the,” it’s cleaner), is the latest in his career of hushed-tone dramas. But while The Father won Zeller and Anthony Hopkins Oscars for their depiction of a man slowly decaying from Alzheimer’s and The Son saw Hugh Jackman reconnecting with an estranged son, Bunker is more of a “hey, what are you building over there? A bunker? Mind if I menace you while you do it?” affair.

The movie follows Miguel (Javier Bardem), an architect given the chance to build a survivalist billionaire’s (Paul Dano) bunker. Unfortunately, Miguel’s wife, Sophia (Penélope Cruz), doesn’t think it’s such a good idea. In fact, per the logline, it causes her “to question their relationship of 17 years as they are drawn deeper into a life of extreme wealth, paranoia, and fear.” Things only get worse when a malevolent next-door neighbor (Stephen Graham) puts a hole in their shared wall to better peep on Miguel’s family.

There is a lot going on in Bunker, but you’ll have to pay good money to see if Miguel does, indeed, build the thing. Bunker opens in limited cities on December 11 and nationwide on January 15.
